One day at the south end of Oak Island, NC, we paddleboarded over to an empty island. This island is only accessible at extreme low tide. My kids, then 8, 10 & 12, were marveled at the unusual things hanging out in the tide pools on this deserted island. It was here in these tidepools that we saw our first ever octopus. It was no bigger than my hand and at first it was very still. As we watched, though, the water in this particular tide pool was still going out and the octopus quickly had to find another hang out spot. We watched in amazement as he made his way to deeper water and finally slipped back into the sea. It was a magical moment for all of us.
